It sounds like the backlight of your 3400 maybe broken. Which model of ST3400 do you have? Usually the problem is the display is too bright at night. |

Or, can't see crap outdoors, in direct sun. |

It almost sounds like he has one of the reflective displays. They're quite good outdoors in the sunlight, but are virtually useless at night and/or indoors. I wish they would have thrown a front light on them (kinda like the ST4121).

the rare ones are the xvga indoor only 1024 x 768, they can go to the higher res without scroling.
the svga's are lim to 800 x 600, and actually work OK outside if you find a shadow. I think either his is "broke", or the hardware contrast may be bottomed out. limited viewing at night? Bad digitizer??? on screen controls don't work??

There are two different versions of the SVGA... the backlit transmissive version and the "non-lit" reflective.
I've got both. Still looking for that elusive "best of both worlds".

cool, all mine are the 800 x 600 backlit. I have played with it a little outdoors, not very visible in direct sun. kind of puts a damper on my motorcycle nav system project. I don't want to be leaning way over the tankbag squinting at streets and trips, when i should be watching the road. |

Have you considered one of the nav pieces that has voice navigation? I don't like taking my eyes off the road either.

Please be aware that Pennsylvania has a law against mounting a video screen (i.e. TV, video tape, dvd) within view of the driver. I don't know if there are any other states with similar laws. |

Makes you wonder what they do about the Acura's, Lexus's, and other vehicles that have the screen built-in to the dash.

I have considered the voice recognition. I do not watch dvd, play mp3 or TV...The only thing I do is surf the internet , check my email. Not illegal in California and if Im lost I turn on the GPS. My goal is to place 4 small usb cameras on each side of the navigator to record since I upgraded the HD to a 30 gig. Does anyone know of a good usb cameras I have tried many. Not pleased at all. Here is another pic from my camera phone.
