Yes it is out of warranty. Nope ... let me clarify ... Acer instructed me to look online ... I asked if that would not be inherently illegal ... they mentioned that not so if the OS was not also running on the original system (or any other for that matter). The suggested that a someone with a dead machine could sell their WXPTPE as long as it was not concurrently elsewhere.
see above ShaunJUK Jan 03 2005 - 07:14:08 "I have managed to re-install xp tablet using various methods on this site (thanks guys) anyway, what software do you recommend I put on it and how do I get my screen to rotate in tablet mode to portrait?
Thanks Shaun"
How did ShaunJUK do this with various methods ... from any collection of sources? |

If you have access to the hard drive, you can make a backup Windows XP Tablet intallation CD. You can also subsribe to MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) and get Win XPT. If you neither have access to the hard drive, nor the MSDN, then the only alternative I see is someone selling you their CDs. At least that is the only legal method. Someone could be bribed into selling their backup CDs.
The instructions for making a backup copy of XPT are on this website. Do a search in order to find it. |

I am having to send the Tablet to Acer to have XPT reloaded. Time is of the essense and I have lost too much time trying to find the least expensive solution. I appreciate the comments and suggestions. The harddrive developed some bad sectors ... that is why it died ... in the course of extracting data it was discovered that one of the most dead portions contained OS data. Basically I was SOL. Thanks. |

I have a C104TCI machine (out of warranty) and I bought it from someone who thought he had the recovery CDs and turned out he didn't. I just got off the phone with Acer tech support and he said Acer does NOT even carry them in inventory so I couldn't buy a set if I wanted one. That SUCKS, a 2 or 3 year old laptop that Acer is saying I have remove software from someone else's machine so I can install it on mine, THEY don't even sell it and I can't seem to find it anywhere. Sounds kinda lame to me. Anybody have any luck finding a set of recovery CDs since Acer doesn't even sell them anymore. Also, I understood the CAL or license on the sticker on the machine is what gave you "license" to install the software I never knew the media to also have to be unique ?? Luckily, they do actually carry the hard drive bezel as a part and I was able to buy that so I can get a hard drive to stick in there :) |

I just got my Tablet back yesterday. Acer will not sell you a copy of their OEM OS installation CD-ROM ... but they will install it on your machine if you send it back to them = $200! All is well ... I am still in the same dilema ... if something else happens ... I am out of luck ... I can only make a "ghost" image of my hard drive and use that to reload if a drive fails or whatever. $200 is alot for something that is worth $700 on ebay ... but it is better than a replacement-upgrade for $4500 ... I am still saving up for that Toshiba someday.
Good Luck. |

Do a search through this forum on how to make your own Windows XP Tablet disks from the hard drive. It's a life saver. I have never tried ghosting the drive, but I assume that will work as well. |
