Hello, I am a noob to the tablet world, and I am considering getting one to use in my home theater. I have run across several auctions on e-bay for fujitsu 3400 without hard drives and with "bad spots" on the digitizer.
First, can I just stick any laptop hard drive in there, install an OS and drivers? Or, is there a "restore cd" that will put a win98 image on a drive from a PC, then install that in the tablet?
Second, how difficult/expensive is it to replace the digitizers? Most of my PC experience is with rebuilding desktops, so I am unfamiliar with the tablet architecture...
Thanks for any help...

All I can say is no and no... Most of the 3400s sold on ebay without a hard drive also do not include the ribbon cable, this is almost impossible to find now, but yes the HD is a stock model. Fixing the digitizer is not really cost effective on that old a model. A working 3400 would be ideal for your home theater, I have even run XPTE on one with 192mg of RAM and it wasn't bad, but you dont get great handwritting reconition on a touch screen. Win98 is a better option unless XP has a "required" feature. |

Forgot to mention to install an OS you'll need a proprietary fujitsu floppy drive too, there is no USB or PCMCIA boot option. Or you would have to format the HD in the 3400 and make it active, then transfer the HD to another computer to copy the install files, and then return the HD to the 3400 for the OS install. Do NOT fdisk the HD in another computer or it will not boot in the 3400. |

I have XP 'tablet edition' running on my 3400 and installed it with NO floppy drive. Still the floppy drives go for less than $10.00 on ebay. Mine also came with no hard drive, but it did have the drive cable. It would be a good idea to ask the sellers to confirm the cable, otherwise don't bother with the unit. unless you can get them for under $90.00, don't buy it with a bad touch panel either. I took a standard laptop drive and formatted it with DOS, then I loaded DOS usb drivers, configured the startup files and then put it into my 3400's. Once booted up, I CD'd into my usb cdrom and ran the XP install from there. You will need a keyboard to do it this way. My units came with a docking station and keyboards, but the 3400 supports the use of USB keyboard and mouse. I'm using a generic usb 1.1 case and usb driver from panasonic. A little searching on google and some trial and error and you'll be good to go. As for the touch panel, I may have found a replacement panel that will work for a reasonable price. I need to take apart one of my 3400's that has a dead spot in the upper right corner to confirm the measurements. Since windoze places the controls in that corner, I'll have to fix this to make it really usable in my SUV, since I don't want to use a remote or wireless keyboard. Good Luck.

I have to agree with Dozer. I have quite a stable of 3400's and 3500's now. I got some of them from private sellers on eBay, I got one from Market2Market.... and I got a few from Ken Bush at JKSales. Generally speaking the stuff from JK is in really good shape, it is complete, and I haven't had any digitizer poblems at all.

Megatron,
Did you the replacement work? I have 2 with dead touchscreens that I would like to get working.
thanks, Murray |

A few additions/corrections to Mr. Reb:
It can be done without a floppy drive, you need a 40 to 44 pin 2.5” IDE adapter ($5), my complete how-to is in this other thread: http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21376
I have had 100% success fdisk-ing in a different PC, then moving it over, 6 or 7 installs. Are you remembering to make the partition active?
Minor note: not just any laptop harddrive, has to be 9.5mm or slimmer to fit.
If rm1759 is looking at the same buyer I got mine from… you win some you lose some.
I bought one of those pairs with questionable touch screens and missing harddrives:
I got: both harddrive ribbon cables one excellent tablet, it has replaced my primary the screen is so nice one with a difficult (not dead) area about the size of two quarters in the upper right screen and one 3100mAh battery (st3500 oem) that gives me about 2 hrs use, depending, on such factors as WiFi and harddrive activity, as well as the 2600mAh nearly dead one.
I was very careful to bid on only ones that did not state the ribbons were missing. The seller is quite explicit about inventory
BTW: Rm1759, how much you want to spend, I have a fully installed, tested, one for sale.

If I'm wrong Sid, then I'm wrong....haven't checked yet...hehe. Can anyone confirm when Fujitsu started their propriety boot area? I admit its been a few years since I had to redo my 3400. I have a LT C-500 which is slightly newer, maybe it started then? If I get sometime I'll grab a spare HD and try putting it in each to see if it works.
Again sorry if I led anyone a stray..... |

It took me about a day to work it out. If you memember, I have the mystery FD which works great in OS, but is not bootable from.
Could there be that big a difference between 3400 and 3500?

Does anybody know if these (3400/3500) tablets are pressure sensitive or not? Ive been trying to work this out for days now and still havent got a clue either way; im trying to figure out if theyd be any use for animating/designing on and this is an absolute must have feature for this kind of work.
cheers,

Nope,
Sadly they are not pressure sensitive.
