I was trying to play a DVD-Video disc which I created on my desktop machine with Nero Buring Rom 6.6.0.5 on my new NEC dvd burner. The disc is a DVD+R DL, and I came across a post by a French user indicating that the Pioneer DVR-K13RA model drive (which ships standard on the C303xmi Tablet PC) does *not* support DVD+R DL reads. Does anyone know if there's a firmware upgrade for the drive that will enable support of DVD+R DL discs? Seems a little odd that )_reading_ this format is not supported.

I just ordered a DVR-14L to upgrade my new 303XMi that burns 8X and 2.4DL and will let you know if the KV-13RA reads them. I thought DL reading was DVD playback universal, that being the whole idea. |

So you can order the DVR-14L as a module that fits into the C303 media bay? If so, that's awesome. Can you tell me where you ordered it?

Its only the bare module to switch out, but is very simple six screws exchange. Another great benefit of Acer 300's. I've done so many times with Mac laptops, I'm hoping there won't be any hardware issues with XP, but there shouldn't be except having to update to NTI version 7 burner software for DL-R support.
Provantage.com has the drive modules for $128 shipped which is an amazing price for such new OEM hardware. |

As I expected, the 8X/2.4DL DVR-K14L drive is physically identical to the stock DVR-K14L3RA so swapping drives only took a few minutes and the C303 faceplate interchanged directly over to the 14L drive for an easy, seamless upgrade.
Also, original NTI DVD burner version 6.7 saw the new drive correctly and offered 8X burning. I believe 2.4X dual layer burning support may require version 7.0 upgrade, but 6.7 lists it in properties. |

I ordered the DVR-K14L drive too (haven't received it yet), but I'm curious what you mean by "faceplate"? There's no real faceplate on the original DVR-K13RA, but there is a frame you can unscrew. Since the DVR-K14L is a slot loader and the original drive is not a slot loader, I'm hoping you mean the front face doesn't leave an odd gap on the right edge (where the original DVD drive has a curved edge).

Robert,
The K14L is not a slot loader, its the identical tray-loading chassis as the original K-13RA. The slot loader model is something like K-AOL naming. The faceplate I referred to is the front plate with the screen logos and eject button, etc. It attaches with two screws and three tabs (the center one recessed in opening).
BTW, I saw references that stated non-Multi notebook DVD drives don't play DL DVD's generally, desktop DVD drives and supposedly most DVD players will. Although it appears the standards are still being set for the new specs. |

Oh, ok, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying! What did you do with your old (original) DVD module? Do they make external casings for such modules? I think I saw an external case for a slot loader module.

This is the slot loader model that I confused with the DVR-K14L:

Esbuy.com also sells the DVR-K14L for $205. I have an external notebook DVD module USB2/firewire case I bought from Ultradrives.com for $70, the module slips right in. Sometimes Newegg.com has the same housing for around $40. USB2 only versions are cheaper still. |

there will be an DVR-K15L available in a few weeks, which has compared to DVR-K14L following benefits:
Read CD: 32x (K14L: 24x) Read DVD: 12x (K14L: 8x) Read DVD-RAM: 2x (-) Write CD-R: 24x (16x) Write CD-RW: 24x (10x) Write DVD-RW: 6x (4x) Write DVD+RW: 8x (4x) Write DVD+DL: 4x (2,4x)
Speed for DVD-R/+R stayed at 8x
I think the increase in Reading Speed, and the remarkable increase in CD-RW burning and the possibility to read DVD-RAM are nice options.
I'm looking forward to hear that it fits in C300 as well. Can't wait to exchange the original drive, slow reading of most media really sucks. |
