I am looking to buy an ST5022D. Can anyone comment on the fan noise and heat?
PortableOne lists a 7200 RPM 60 GB drive option for this unit. Will it be too hot and/or loud?
Thanks!

I've had the ST5020D with the 60gb 7200 drive & 2 gb of ram for about 2 weeks. Not hot at all and sometimes i can bearly hear it running. Much quieter than my M200.

Tek:
Do you feel the XGA screen res is adequate or would you suggest waiting for the SXGA?
PortableOne is the only place I see selling this with the option for a faster HD.
Did you upgrade the memory yourself or at time of puchase? I see cucuial wants $360 per 1GB stick, and Portable1 shows $600 for the 2GB option, which is cheaper but I do not know whose memory they use. Any ideas?

jbracer,
I have the ST5022 with the 7k60 Hitachi HDD through Portable One and you can feel a very little vibration when it starts but as far as noise goes there really is non, or you would have to really be listening for it. Normal operation you can't tell that it is on. I don't know about everyone else but I think the screen gets warmer than the area where the drive is. The back gets warm but the suede really cuts down on any thing uncomfortable. |

It's funny you mention hi-res screens. I'm a 1600x1200 default kind of guy on all of my laptops. But I noticed that when using my previous tablet (Toshiba M200), I loved the hi res in laptop mode, but not in tablet mode. That's one of the reasons I went to a slate tablet. I am finding that I use the slate more to write on than the convertable. If the slate had a 14" screen, I would definately want hi-res. But a 12" screen with hi-res is kind of small. I like 768x1024 in portrait for writing on a 12" screen. It feels like i am writing on a regular piece of paper and isn't that what it was designed for in the first place?
I'm a crucial guy. I normally only buy crucial. I'm the Director of IT at my company and all of my toys (I mean tools) are on the company tab. This means that I don't mind getting better at a slighty higher premium since I'm not paying out of pocket. But I also don't just throw money out the window. Just because it costs more, doesn't always mean it's better. Anyway, I got the memory, hard drive and larger battery upgrade at purchase. I normally just buy bare bones and upgrade myself, but Patrick at Portable was very helpful and they did it all before it shipped out to me. It turns out that they order stock from Japan, do the upgrades when it arrives in their shop and then ship the upgraded system to you. Portable one was great (especially Patrick) and I am definately using them for all of my future tablet purchases. I hope I don't sound like a salesman for them, but I order a million plus in equipment and software every year and work with a lot of vendors. These guys are good.
I haven't cracked open this puppy since I got it, so I can't tell you what kind of memory is in it. I can say that this is a sweet tablet and would buy another one in a heartbeat. The only thing I can't get to work is the fingerprint scanner. I have instituted pass phases of 15 characters or more instead of a complicated password. This really sucks for a slate tablet user. The scanner would be nice. I found a signature logon software what works with a Windows 2003 domain logon and so I'm not too worried about the scanner anymore. I also found a LaCie DVD Burner in slim format, that uses two USB ports to run. One for power and one for connection to the tablet. I now have a DVD burner that I don't need to carry another damm power supply for in my backpack.
Good Luck. Which ever you choose, I think you will be happy. |

I am hesiating between M1400VA and the ST5022. Shall I ask few questions?
Did you try your new ST5022 near window or with intense fluorescent light? Can you compare with the Motion M1400VA? Is it a glass or a polymer screen? Which carrying case do you have? Do you use screen protector? Is replacing the HD a simple job?
Thanks |
