My Tablet PCs: T4010

duedilligence - thanks for the observations. I cant' wait to try it myself!

I ordered the bump case, which should temper the heat on the bottom surface (in addition to the felt padding). It also has a cross-strap on the bottom for gripping your hand to the bottom of the tablet to make it steady when you hold it while standing or sitting. I plan on keepting the tablet in the bump case all the time, and when I transport it, I'll put it in the padded compartment of my lovely Brenthaven notebook backpack (which I bought at the Apple store - no wonder it's pretty).

The bump case is supposed to be for veritcal industries - you can strap it around your shoulder, or your neck, and strap it on your hand, and use it like a portable terminal (think utility companies, warehouses), but I think it's perfect for a student too!

Stan - thanks for the Agilix info. I agree about the Fujitsu business model - I think they are very committed to the tablet and have a lot to lose (or gain) from it's success in the consumer market. I wonder what their response will be to the cheap tablets coming out?

Hi robrahm,

The standard Fujitsu discount is 5%, plus I got a promotional free color printer (not sure if it's still going now, but I think it is). You can save your shopping cart online, but when you make the order you MUST do it over the phone through 1800-FUJITSU, or they can't apply the discount.

They asked what school I went to, but didn't ask for any proof. The Apple store I noticed isn't much more thorough at checking. I guess they're not worried about fraud?

I haven't used GoBinder or OneNote much at all, since I don't have a real tablet yet - I just played with each of them for a couple of hours to get a sense of how they work, and how I would use them. GoBinder can be downloaded for a trial for free, but I'm not sure about OneNote. I was really impressed with OneNote when I first saw it - how you can place text/ink anywhere, move it around, drop in graphics and web pages, etc. GoBinder seems less slick, more buggy, but potentially better suited for me (as it is student oriented). I have complained about the lack of audio recording integration in GoBinder, and Agilix has said they are aware people want this (it's in another thread on the GoBinder forum).

I'm looking forward to reviewing my new toys!

Hopefully my T4010 will ship today so I can have the computer on Tues/Wed next week.

It's so hard to wait!!! I can't wait to use:

-- ink enabled --
* OneNote
* GoBinder
* MathJournal
* OrangeGuava/DIP
* MS Physics Simulator
* Cornell CCSL (3d journal) http://www.mae.cornell.edu/ccsl/research/sketch/
* Corel Grafigo
* Alias Sketchbook Pro
* Artrage
* Tablet UML
* MaxVista

-- not ink enabled --
* Maple 9.5 (need for calculus)
* Visual Studio .NET
* Cygwin (unix tools)
* Photoshop/Illustrator (wacom supported)
* MS Office/Visio (may be ink integrated?)

This should really be in the general discussion area but ohwell. :)

What else should I be looking forward to... go ahead, make it even harder to wait why dont you.

My T4000 bump case just arrived, and wow, it's really really cool. Click 'Universal Bump Case' on this page to see a pic. http://webshop.fujitsupc.com/fpc/Ecommerce/SelectAccessories.jsp

[Edit: try this one instead. select your notebook model (T4010/D) and then you'll get the list of carrying cases http://webshop.fujitsupc.com/fpc/Ecommerce/accstorecont.jsp?category=carrying%20cases]

Now I just need the T4010 to put in it. The top of the case has a velcro cover that flips back around over the right side of the tablet so you can use the T4010 in tablet mode. There is a bezel of black plastic around the screen area with cutouts for the screen buttons. There are cutouts all around for the modular bay, pcmcia, and other ports. The case opens up like a regular notebook case, except it sort of attaches to the tablet with hooks and clear straps. The bottom of the flipover cover (the one that flips back when you're in tablet mode) has a crossover elastic strap you can slip your hand/arm in to get a tight/stable grip on the tablet. On the bottom there's another velcro bit I'm not sure about yet. There are two cool little handles, and o-rings for attaching a shoulder strap.

At $99 it's a bit pricey, but it's custom designed for the T4000 so you can't get a better fit/form factor. I'm pleased with the design and can't wait to use it with the tablet and report back on it.

Posting is all I can do to keep myself from going nuts waiting for my tablet to arrive. Have no fears, I will keep on! Thanks for the positive feedback, cme :D

PS. Do you have any questions about the T4000 series in the mean time? I can compare it to the Motion M1400 and Toshiba M20x, as those are the ones I compared the T4000 against when doing 4 months of research.

Daniel,

Two things. First, that link didn't work for some reason. Will you check it again please? Second, I'm looking at the T4000 and M1400. I'd like to learn what you discovered in your comparison research. Feel free to post it or email it. Thanks!

robrahm, sorry I thought I had double checked it. I edited the post and put a new link on it.

The major difference between the T4000 and M1400 is of course the form factor. One is a 5lb convertible, and one is a 3lb slate.

If you still haven't decided between a covertible and slate, there are numerous posts describing the drawbacks and benefits of each form factor. Besdies the format, there's the issue of CPU power. The T4000, being larger, can sport currently up to a 1.8ghz Pentium-M which according to benchmarks I've seen, about on par with a 3.0+ ghz P4. The 1.1ghz Pentium-M or 900mhz Celeron-M on the M1400 is going to be significantly less fast (as much as half).

Besides that, with the T4000 you can get the modular integrated multiformat DVD burner, which justifies the weight (along with the keyboard) for the convertible. Personally I love how the Fujitsu T4000 and ST5000 series can have extended battery life. I ordered the main battery + modular battery and expect to get 7-8 hours battery life on my tablet. Try that with an M1400 without switching batteries. The ST5000 series Fujitsu slate also has an extended battery that goes 6-7 hours (supposedly) compared with the M1400's 3-4 hours.

The M1400VA seems to be the closest thing to a real digital notepad, based on what I've heard, but it's not cheap, you don't get a lot of CPU or battery, and you can't type without a separate keyboard. I hear the Fujitsu ST5000 series compares favorably with it (especially with indoor/outdoor screen).

I could write more, but I should do something work related. :D

Thanks Dnaiel. I am just fighting between a slate and conv. Having never been without a KB, I do not know how much I will or won't miss it. I do not want to carry the separate peripheral KB, but I like the slim form factor of the slate.

Either way, I will just have to make a choice and dive in, and after using it decide what i would like best. I believe the conv. is the safest for those like me who are unsure, as you always have laptop mode to reach back into familiar territory.

Daniel,

Thanks. I have been looking at the ST5000 as well. So many choices!!! I am drawn to the speed. I'm not sure if I want/need a convertible. I've thought about going the bluetooth route on that. I believe you mentioned you're a student. If I'm correct, will you share what you are studying so I can gauge the type of use for you tablet? Thanks. Happy Waiting.

P.S.--Work is overrated!

cme, basically if your tablet use will involve programming, or huge amounts of writing or transcribing (fast touch typing) then I strongly urge you to get a convertible. If you mostly surf the web and do lightweight MS Office stuff, you shouldn't need a keyboard very often. Also, you should play with a few tablets and see how you like using the handwriting input method. You may not want to get stuck with something that's awkward in the beginning.

robrahm, if speed is a major concert, a convertible (T4000) will be a major improvement over a slate, and will probably be a better return on investment due to being powerful enough to run the next generation windows OS at a decent speed, although refurb. slates are pretty affordable.

I'm a computer science (soon to be engineering) student. I'm also a professional working in a corporate environment. I'm also an artist and musician when I'm not either of those. My tablet use will include:

* homework
* notes
* design work (technical + art)
* music
* capturing ideas
* web browsing for fun
* wireless terminal (got wireless broadband from VerizonWireless)
* development

I think i'll end up using the keyboard about 25 - 40% of the time.
