rob, I ordered my T4010 with an 80GB 5400 RPM drive, so I don't expect I'll be upgrading it any time soon.
I suspect that, as with most warranties, upgrading the hard drive yourself will void the warranty (although they may not find out you did it yourself). You can have the HDD upgraded at an authorized dealer, which is also good if you don't have a lot of spare time to disassemble and reassemble your computer. A nice 80 GB drive can be had for under $200 I believe - I had been thinking about upgrading my Apple iBook at some point, but I'm glad I didn't because having a valid warranty helped me sell it!
As for ram, I ordered it with a 512MB stick in slot 1. I then ordered a 1GB stick from newegg.com - it's made by Crucial, one of the better RAM makers. It's a generic OEM stick made for Dell, Sony, Toshiba, etc. I paid about $264.
Hopefully I'll have my baby around lunch time tomorrow so I can be even less productive than usual at work. ;) |

I'm afraid I'll have a similar problem when I finally get one. I'll be starting dental school in the fall, so I hope I have time before then to learn my way around the tablet! (whichever tablet I get) |

I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT
Went down to the messaging center and picked up the box on my own just to make sure it got into my hands today. It was compactly but safely packed by Fujitsu, and I had it up and running in minutes once I got back to my cube. It's already a little warm (after 10 minutes) but after 30 minutes it hasn't started making any noise at all.
I just did the windows updates/registration process, now I'm going to apply the screen protector and put it in my bump case, and charge the modular bay battery.
What a BEAUTIFUL machine. I already had a conversation on the pros/cons of tablets with one coworker and another came over to eagerly inspect everything! :D
In case you didn't hear...
I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT
I promise to take some time to write some reviews/journals over the next few days instead of playing with my tablet... it will be hard, but I want you guys to know what you're missing ;) (or loving if you already got one)

Daniel,
I'm really interest to know how the noise and heat goes. Also, I've read that there's sometimes lots of noise when running a cd. It might have been specific to a music cd. Thanks. |

Robhram, I'll take a shot at answering your questions. The heat is not a problem. I read a number of messages about it, but I have now used the 4010 for a week solidly and while it does get warm, it is not excessive. Fortunately, for now at least, the noise I reported earlier that came on when the screen light was turned down has not been a problem. Maybe just being in office environment instead of quieter living room was enough to solve that. However, the DVD-CD optical drive mine came with is very, very noisy. I am working with a language CD that cannot be downloaded onto the machine and it is annoying when it comes on. Sorry to say anything negative, but I don't think I have ever had a laptop create this much noice with the optical drive. I was definitely not plan on listening to music through the CD drvie. I have not tried a movie yet. But for work, I do not anticipate that this will be a problem. I use the media for moving/storing info. On the plus side, the fan is absolutely not a problem. I haven't brought this into a meeting yet, but I would not be worried about fan noise at all.

Hi guys. I agree 100% with duediligence. The warmth on the bottom of the machine isn't a problem - chances are you'll be putting it flat on a desk most of the time anyway. I keep mine in the Fujitsu Convertible Bump Case which completely shields the heat (though I tried using it for several hours without the case just to see what it's like).
With both the main and modular batteries fully charged, the meter says 6:16 minutes left, although yesterday it reported 2:30 left, and after two hours, it still said 1:30, so I believe I will get somewhere between 6-9 hours of use from both batteries with wifi on.
I used OneNote to take notes at a meeting at work. It was much much nicer than paper, and of course, I had to do a demonstration for three people. It generated some jealousy ;) There was no noticeable noise whatsovever! Just a brief whoosh as it comes out of standy/hibernation/shutdown.
I used GoBinder to take notes at school. I kept it in tablet position in the bump case. Since it takes a little fidgeting to get the bump case from notebook to tablet (have to fiddle with straps, zippers, velcro) I think I'll mostly leave it in tablet position for classes (except comp. sci lab where we program).
I tried recording the lecture, but can't find my recording now ;) Later I tried experiementing with recording but it was barely audible - will report back later after more experiments.
In class, the professor dimmed the lights to show a slide presentation a couple of times - adjusting the screen brightness with the Fujitsu settings program was very quick. Several people asked about the tablet at school, and the professor had a colleague come in to take a look. A lot of people asked how much it cost. I made sure to mention the lower cost options.
The Wifi signal is great, and the integration with XP is fantastic - I get a list of protected and unprotected wifi access points and the signal strength in one interface. This notebook picks up at least as many wifi networks as my old iBook did and the iBook was supposed to have had great wifi signal (very popular for wardriving and wifi security auditing).
My VerizonWireless BroadBandAccess card is nifty, but I don't get amazing reception anywhere I go... at least it's a connectivity backup or an option when I don't want my traffic to go over a corporate network (work/school).
By the way, the screen is fantasic even with the wonderful screen protector on it. I get a little distortion when viewing at wide angles, but this is to be expected, I think. I had no problems taking notes in class with the tablet off to the right side, or taking meeting notes with it in the middle of the table.
I have to say, the pen kinda stinks, but that's partly because I haven't customized the buttons. The inclusion of a tether was nice, but the bump case doesn't allow access to the holder on the screen bezel. I will probably grab a cross pen with eraser because I'm all about pen ergonomics and this pen is pretty dinky/thin. I'm sure it's comparable to what other tablet makers offer though.
The DVD multi drive seems noisy, I have to agree, though I didn't do much with it yet, so don't write it off yet. It could very well be that it's quiet for playing music CD's - I haven't tried yet. This however doesn't bother me one bit - noise for the CD drive is a non issue for me.
I had one spontaneous reboot - not sure how it happened, although the Intel wifi software was complaining at one point about wanting to disable the windows wifi management, and I may not have done that yet... running smooth otherwise.
I downloaded mathjournal, and 3djournal from Cornell, both a lot of fun - though 3djournal is unstable.
I'm thrilled with my purchase. I figure I'll keep posting these mini reviews/journal entries and after a week or so I'll write up a full review.
My conclusion: this is by far the most amazing computer I've ever used, besides my old Amiga 500. :D |

Thank you Daniel. great report. Keep it coming with whatever you find.
Do you have a preference so far between oneNote and gobinder?
does the thickness in slate mode cause any issues when writing notes?
What do the hard buttons come pre-programmed for?
Thanks |

Im quite satisfied w/ my BumpCase. As, was pointed out, it is a little bit of work to convert from tablet mode to laptop mode, assuming you have the 4010 fully buttoned down in the case. I will usually set it up in tablet mode in the case before school, and leave it that way all day. Then at home Ill usually leave it in laptop mode in the case. Ill try and take some pictures of the 4010 in the case, in the different modes, so that you can better understand what Obscurite and I are talking about. *hard to envision w/o pictures id imagine* |
