Hi,
I recently got a Fujitsu T4010, but only because the D version was not being made anymore, according to the sales rep... The reason I need an atheros based card is monitoring mode. I work as a consultant, and we do a lot of wireless networks, which requires a well supported WiFi card, and the intel ones are terrible, especially with linux... so, I bought a miniPCI Atheros card, but now I don't know what do do with it. I looked at my T4010, but I can't figure out where it goes... there is no "easy" access for the miniPCI port as it seems. The memory and harddrive bay are the only areas for easy access. Has anyone every opened up a T4010 and knows where the miniPCI card is located? Does anyone have a detail technical drawing of the T4010? Thanks,
Treo

FYI, here's an article I ran accross on upgrading the mini-PCI wifi card on a different lifebook model. May or may not increase your confidence that this is possible.

This is from the kismet site. Looks like centrino does support monitoring! Maybe you don't need the Atheros (except for 'A' support).
http://kismetwireless.net/documentation.shtml:
ipw2100 Intel/Centrino Linux ipw2100-0.44+ http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/ Capture interface: 'ethX' The Linux IPW2100/Centrino drivers for 802.11b cards now support rfmon, so here's support for them. They act more or less like any other wireless interface would. THIS IS NOT FOR WINDOWS OR FOR SYSTEMS USING NDISWRAPPER OR LINUXANT. |

Treo, Sad to say, I have nothing useful to add, but I am curious. Was the sales rep from Fujitsu? I just purchased and received a T4010D direct from Fujitsu and they are still (at least as of last week) listed on the web page. It came complete with the Atheros sticker! (The sticker situation on laptops is getting out of control imho -- sort of like ads at the movies.)

Hi,
well... I bought mine from www.clearanceclub.com... and the reps there said that it was that way... not that I'd trust them... but they wouldn't let me cancel the order, as it comes "directly from Japan, custom made"... well, whatever, the price was right, even without the Atheros card... buying from Fujitsu directly would cost me the price of a memory upgrade and the extra battery just in taxes... I looked at the T3010 article... it seems like the T4010 is different... I don't have any screws at all near the keyboard cover plate... I know the plate can come out, it clearly has some wiggle room (very minimal, but it is a separate piece)... I don't want to break the damn thing... and with no visible screws holding it in place, i am not so sure what holds it down. |

Treo,
Did I at least allay your fears that the centrino card A) isn't supported by linux (it is) B) can't do monitoring mode (it can)
Would you *still* get it just for 'A' support?
[Edit: I meant, would you *still* purchase the Atheros card separately in addition to the centrino card already in yout T4010. Just wanted to clarify :) ] |

Hi,
well... I am clad that it is supported (I knew that it was at least with ndiswrapper... but that's as good as crap... the new driver is much better than that)... its good to know that monitoring mode is supported, I did not know that beforehand. I certainly don't HAVE to exchange the card anymore... I will probably just leave it now... but if someone posts a link to detailed instructions, I might as well put the new card I already bought in... otherwise it will go back on ebay... cost me $70 after all... I never had to deal with A-networks before... so that won't be a problem... Thanks for your help,

Yay, I actually helped someone avoid needless hassle. Go tablet pc buzz. :)
Let me know how you get on with Linux. I'll be using VMWare/colinux for my linux/bsd development needs, methinks. |
