This one looks like the Toshiba M200, released over a year ago. No internal drive, only XGA, only SD card, no PCI Express, integrated graphics, blah blah.
Is there anything new or good about this model other than the memory type and the processor? You would think they would introduce at least one single feature updated from what has been available for over 2 years in other tablets.
Why would anyone buy the Tc4200?
What is the other table being released? Maybe it will be an improved 1100 with some real features. |

12" WIDE VIEWING ANGLE screen Up to 2.13GHz CPU 3 USB ports variety of docks optional extended life battery DDR2 memory only 4.5 pounds
looks really good to me. You can't have everything in a ultraportable even if it wasn't a tablet. |

Also, manufacturers want some room to come out with upgraded models in the future. If it's too feature packed, it may knock prices up and miss their target consumers and make it more difficult to come out with new and improved models on a frequent basis. It could also be that this model was being drawn up over a year ago, and Toshiba was quicker to innovate and release it. 4.5lbs would make it a very nice subnotebook packed with features.
Wide viewing angle was something that many wanted on the M200/205. I guess HP did some research to conclude that most users were not comfortable using a 12 inch display with SXGA resolution. It seems like they should have been able to offer an internal drive at 4.5lbs. I wonder what takes up all fhe weight?

It’s last years model, at last years prices...
Saw the news. It had a prior planned release date, which is why the spec’s seem so very dated. Clunky, heavy, expensive, past its prime and not at all HP slick. Carbon copy of a bad M200 with updated CPU basically. Come on, stacked up next to Fujistu and Toshiba’s newer and way lower priced offerings, this doesn’t pass any sort of muster.
Ouch. (imho). Hope they somehow redeem themselves.
Honestly, me (well Peter too) got wind of this (HP Convertible) eons ago, but then they went no it’s not coming, yes it is, no it’s not, yes, no, no, no, never ever, and now yes. Without really directly telling anyone, and having MSFT leak the news via a tech magazine? And not showing up at CES and having 95% of the company seemingly unware of the whole Tablet concept and doing a quiet quiet NIGHTTIME news release but yet a pre-release? And now shunning and dissing those pesky “consumers” and “educators” at every chance before press and analysts. Plus actively batting real customers away. What in the world?
See “HP is about to unveil a Tablet PC”, Washington Post (Aug. 3, 2003) HP World 2003 was really when this was supposed to hit. Well according to some information I had. But nothing's fixed, esp. with HP. ;)
UPDATE: Notice the “on-the-go professional experience”, “IT Managers” and “enterprise-wide deployment” and the lack of an easy TC1100 Nvidia CPU. Targeting the corporates, eh? Never mind everyone else. Well at that price point and with those spec's, I honestly can’t see the average CIO drinking too deep from HP’s well. Plus HP is infamous for doing an Apple-like “stick it you hard” for the Memory upgrades.
Well, that’s my analysis, warts and all. |

I guess they just need a competitive price for this, but that doesn't seem like it's happening.... |

Disappointing, considering how innovative and feature-packed the TC1xxx have been, especially the video/display subsystem. Hopefully, though, it will help build the enterprise market, with HP being the only large-scale enterprise player in the tablet market.
I've been thinking a convertible for my next tablet. If Fujitsu can get off the integrated graphics, I may have to go that way.... |

I wonder when the official release is going to be and if there's any news on the TC1100. They're coming out with a whole bunch of new notebooks. It still possible there will be two new tablets as predicted. Its still pretty early in California |

Hm on http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/tabletpc/ It reads "256-MB or 512-MB DDR II SDRAM, upgradeable to 2048-MB maximum" for the tc1100, DDR II? Is this a mistake? |

How much is it anyhow?
As for the weight, am thinking it's the glass display. |

Well they haven't said, but I have heard $2,000 to $2,500, maybe more if factor in extreme memory, with PV984AW#ABA higher priced over PV985AA#ABA obviously. Well, that PC World mag bit said just over $2,000. Maybe some hope here, maybe the pricing data is just outdated?
“On February 2, HP plans to introduce two new Tablet PCs in its business notebook lineup. One of the devices will be the company’s first convertible notebook, a machine that resembles a traditional notebook but that has a screen that swivels around to support pen-based computing. The device will cost just over $2000...” -- http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,119499,00.asp
Also... quote: If it’s too feature packed, it may knock prices up and miss their target consumers and make it more difficult to come out with new and improved models on a frequent basis.
Yes, but here you have all the high prices, and none of the features at a time when everyone is going Consumer pricing schemes, (Toshiba, Acer, et al.) Worst of all worlds. And at those prices, you better make hearts jump, this doesn't, and has a bad buzz already, as gotten a few press and analyst pings.
I'd take that extra pound and go Toshiba Satellite R10 (my does that look sweet), if I was choosing. But this is the one Tablet, the other new Slate (TC1200?) has yet to be announced, and that's really what everyone is clamoring for. So pay no attention here, besides they dislike us evil “consumers” anyways. ;) So where's the other one? And why the clunky ill-timed pre-release? It's Feb 2nd, go big time, big PR splash. We were expecting it. Maybe later on in day? |

Price: as low as $1599 on CDW. Also, the higher priced model does come with bluetooth.
