Tried using XP restore, that didn't work. Tried using Gateway's restoration CD. Any other suggestions?

Try downloading Linux, "Mandrake Move"..
www.mandrakelinux.com
Bootable OS from CD, you can then use the network connection to connect to an FTP site to restore your files.
Your drive will be under /mnt/ide (or somthing like that, thats the directory listing)
Then format the drive, using linux, then try using the Restore Disks.

There may be some other help online about recovering data, but expect your disk to need formatting and start from the begining. with your computer!

Huge,

Could you be more descriptive?

What happens when you use the Gateway restoration CD.

What messages appear on the screen?

has the installation just been killed, or is the disk physically damaged?

if the install is bad, just dl knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/) and then boot from that, mount your partitions and then just transfer all of your files to another computer over then network, or even faster, attach another disk to your computer and tranfer files that way.

if the disk is dab then you might be in some trouble as far as getting your data, but support on these are pretty ok. I had a bad 60gb disk in my m275xlb after my first day of owning it; however, after calling it in they shipped another to my house, along with a postage paid box for the dead disk, that arrived in less than 48hrs. and to MI.

I realized that the disk was dead when every time i would boot to any cd, recovery, windows install, knoppix w/ mnt hda, would work only while running in memory, but halt when accessing the hard disk.

good luck.

Sorry I forgot to include some details in my original post. I was in crisis mode and wasn't thinking clearly. Apparently, I received a virus in my email that my Norton AV didn't pick up. The virus turned off all my AV software and proceeded to email itself to everyone in my contact database (you can imagine how many irrate calls I got about that). Anyway, I got Norton AV running again and was doing a full scan when Norton crashed. To make a long story short, I spent over an hour on the phone with Gateway support running diagnostics, etc and finally had to officially pronounce my hard drive dead. Gateway put in the request for a new hard drive that same night (2/4) and I should have a new hard drive tomorrow sometime.

Thanks for your advice. I tried to download the software you guys suggestioned by my ancient desktop pc wasn't able to stay connected long enough to download the whole thing.

I'll let you know how things go if anyone is interested.

Thanks again,

Huge
