Sick of the Interest in my Tablet

I think I know what celebrities feel like. I used to love to show my tablet to anyone who was interested, but now I'm sick of it. People think that just because it's interesting, everyone should have full access to it. If I'm working, they want to see what I'm doing, write on the screen, write their name on whatever document I'm reading, check their email, etc. etc. etc. If it's put away, people randomly just ask if they can play on my computer since I'm not using it. For god's sake, the thing costs 2500 dollars, it's like a child to me, and going paperless means your whole life really is on there. Then, if you hesistate, sigh, say no, or anything like that, they think you're a jerk for not indulging them. I could go on and on. Am I the only one who gets like this? :-(

Nanograss battery technology

mPhase Technologies is developing a new type of battery, based on a Lucent Labs discovery using a microscopic material called nonagrass. mPhase says it is 12-18 months from commercial availability. It would sure be nice if this were a good battery-life solution for Tablets.

newfound love for my own handwriting

I have to know if it's just me: has anyone else fallen in love with their own handwriting since getting a tablet? I guess I never really paid attention to it before; but now that every stroke is so scrutinized I can't help noticing that I have lovely handwriting.

Has this tablet turned me into some sort of handwriting deviant?

Stylus modifications for "fingerpainting"?

One of the questions I sometimes get when stangers see a tablet is to ask if you can use your finger. I know a few tablet brands have dual purpose screens that are both active (for stylus input) and resisitive (for finger input). I think resistive digitizers don't let you get at many of the Tablet features, but what if you wanted to use a fingertip with an active digitizer - for example, to fingerpaint using something like ArtRage?

Is is possible to remove the "active" piece from the stylus and embed it in a glove. It would still require a user to use an extra interface device, but it would be much easier than having to fumble for a pen. Not necessarily as comfortable, or precise, but seems like some users might find it helpful. Just a thought. Any comments (or does anyone have an extra pen they'd be willing to sacrifice in the interest of experimentation)?

Scanning with an ADF

Are there any ADF scanners at a reasonable price that will scan 20-50 pages and then when you flip the pages to do the other side the software automattically pairs the correct pages together and has them all in order? I am interested in it doing OCR as well.

The "Win-Bin" defined.

The idea for this thread though simple and effective was/is subject to the risk of the answers always being provided by the same people and also too quickly for everyone to feel like they are really getting to play.

So I have borrowed the idea from radio stations that run quizzes and place each day's winner in a "Win-Bin" of various duration (1 week, 1 month etc.) thereby enabling other people to get a go.

So, until further notification, all correct puzzle solvers are cordially requested to refrain from posting any results until the duration of 1 week passes subsequent to the time/date of their winning post.

This doesn't prevent any winners from playing of course- just do it in the privacy of your own home.
Incidentally, it is not meant to discourage Win-Binners from posting other supportive comments either, so please continue to be involved (as most have been anyway.)

Several new tablet models have been introduced from Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba, etc. in the last few weeks. Are you planning to replace your present tablet with any of these? Why or why not?

Rebuilding battery packs...or a creative solution?

I have a Fuji stylistic 2300 that I dearly love. I have a couple of problems with it. One is that the hard drive is just toooo small for what i do with it so I am thinking of putting in a 40 GB 7200 rpm disk. I do not use power hungry programs but do like to carry a lot of data around with me. I often use my tablet with a webcam to video classroom activities, to record classes...hundreds of uses! The second issue is not so easy to solve. The battery now will only give me about 50 minutes of use. A replacement is $240. Are there any alternatives? Can I have it rebuilt with cells similar to the original cells? I often travel to different places in China by rail and would like to be able to use the tablet for 15 or 20 hours. I was thinking of making a battery pack out of D cell rechargeables @ 9500 milliamps. 10 of these would give me the required 10.8 volts and a hefty amperage - also about 3 pounds...20 would light up the world! I know they would be a bit heavy. I guess I am trying to stimulate some discussion on this topic. I often think it is a shame that good equipment must be dumped into landfills because of problems like this.

Also, are there any strategies for getting more use out of the battery I already have? Besides the powersettings options?

The manufacturers of our machines sometimes equip them with sub-maximum components.
For example (but not applicable to every machine):

Small (30-40 gig) slower (4200 rpm) hard drives
Lower capacity (256 megs), slower (PC2100) ram
Lower than rated maximum cpu clock speed
Conservative clock speeds for video processors

These are not sub-standard, but rather, sub-maximum.

We discover in various ways (experimentation, trial/error) that some upgrades work and convey benefit. In some cases that benefit comes at a cost, and at other times not.

Thought it might be useful for us to a a single summary thread with links to references.
