New GW M1200 on the way, RAM advice

Hello All,

Nice to be a part of this forum as I am approaching being inducted into the Tablet users tribe (delivery is scheduled 02/08/05).

I opted for a used Gateway M1200 to get the feel and comfort of mobile Tablet and working with it (and probably breaking it) before I foray into a newer expensive model.

My question is, I can't seem to find a specific part number for a 512MB ram upgrade that I am comfortable with purchasing, and knowing that it is the right RAM for a tablet PC.

Any advice would be helpful, and thank you in advance.

Function Lock stuck on Motion Hardtop Keyboard

I just got a call from a field rep of ours who has a hardtop keyboard here and it is stuck in Function Lock mode. Rebooting doesn't reset it, and she's yanked the keys off to make sure nothing was stuck under there. Looks clean.

Any ideas? The rep is out at a client right now and can't use the keyboard. I told her to try to keep to handwritten input for now. (Can't do *that* with a regular laptop!)

I did a search hereabouts and came up with nada. All feedback welcome.

Any announcements from MC?

I'm getting nearer my decision point on which TPC to purchase.

Currently in the running are the HP tc1100 and tc4200 models, the Toshi m200, and a Motion Computing platform.

I think I'm really leaning toward a Motion 1400, but with the recent announcements regarding the HP tc4200, I'm again second-guessing my decision.

The price-per-feature comparison between the current m1400 and the newly released tc4200 reduce the overall value of the m1400, making it much harder to choose the m1400. I'd prefer the *extremely* well thought out design of the slate, but the powerful features of the tc4200 (well, okay, the processor and the ever-so-awesome expasion battery) at a lower/comparable pricepoint...

Has Motion announced, or are they prepared to announce, upcoming feature and/or model changes? Any rumors? I'd be willing to hold out for a little bit longer, and pay a little bit more, for an upgraded m1x00 series system.

Why I can download Macromedia 7, run the installation utility but when I try to use it I get the message that is not installed?

I have in my hands, one motion computing tablet pc. on the back, it has M1400, model T003... that's it. I can't find anything anywhere that tells me that this is a VA model (which it is supposed to be). how can I check? (it's raining here so I can't see how it looks outside).

My Life In "Motion"

I am starting this thread as a means of recording what I am doing with my Motion 1400VA.

I used the title "My Life In 'Motion'" as the title of a review that I wrote about my tablet a couple days after I bought it, so I am using that for the title of the thread.

For those of you who happened to see my thread about not being able to install scanner drivers you know that I had to restore my tablet twice in the last couple days.

This is a fresh beginning for me and I want to document it. Anyone who is interested can follow along, and feel free to jump in to offer your opinions, and to offer moral support when necessary. I can always use moral support.

Here's what happened today. I finally got up the courage to do the second restore and get it right. I got support from Motion to do it right this time. I nice tech named Joe held my hand through the questions and answers at the beginning of the restore process. After that I handled the rest on my own.

I reinstalled the Motion Pac software:
Colligio
Farstone Virtual Drive
Alias Sketchbook Pro
X Think
OneNote

I installed McAfee Antivirus, Firewall, and Security Center.

Then I did a restore point.

I am resolving to take it slowly this time installing apps. I want to do a restore point before each installation, install only one app at a time, and wait a couple days before installing anything else.

Maybe posting my progress here will keep me honest.

I think I have done enough for one night. And, no, I have no plans to install any scanner drivers any time in the near future. :-)

M1400VA vs ST5022

I am looking for a slate TabletPC with the best screen I can get.
First, I have quite bad eyes and my office is just below a large window. I will using Tablet mainly to take handwritten notes, handle Email and do some software development when I travel.

1) Which one is the best in the "near window" context?
2) Is the M1400 hardtop cover works well for half an hour?

NEW M1400 Experiences

I am new to the forum, having joined 9/20/2004. To this point, I have posted 3 responses to issues others are having that I have also had.

This was to have been my first post. I OWE A DEBT OF GRATITUDE to each of you for all of your discussions on various topics. You made it easy for me to confirm that I made the best decision in selecting the Motion Computing M1400 as my tablet PC. I purchased it from Dell, with a 40GB hard drive and 512 GB of RAM. It came with the Motion Office Pak. I have added an additional gigabyte of RAM from Crucial Technology. I am waiting for a Hitachi 60 GB @ 7200 RPM. I will use the Apricorn drive swap kit to clone the current hard drive and then use it for backup. I�ve also installed the WriteSHEILD screen protector and added a Cintiq15X Pressure Sensitive Grip Pen. I am ordering the Motion Slip Case today. I will also add a wireless keyboard. I had planned the Motion Wireless Mobile, but am now considering Microsoft�s �Optical Desktop Elite for Bluetooth� given this post http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17834

With many computer purchased since 1980, this is the neatest computer I have owned. IT IS FANTASTIC! I operate a computer sales& service business in my community. I have set this beautiful machine to allow me to do photo editing with Adobe Photoshop CS; desktop publishing with Adobe PageMaker; and video conferencing with SightSpeed, using a Logitech QuickCam for Notebook Pro. I have Quicken 2005 installed for my banking; Zinio Reader for my magazine subscriptions; and Family Tree Maker for my genealogy. I will also add a Bluetooth GPS for travel, using Microsoft Streets & Trips [included with the PC]. If any of you have questions or need assistance with these, or related applications, I may be able to assist.

Have there been issues/problems, YES!

The first related to files from Microsoft website to upgrade Office 2003 to SP1. The problem was that I could not use Microsoft Excel. Opening Excel started an install Wizard which reports the SKU1CA.CAB & ZF561407.CAB could not be found. When I select cancel, I get a �fatal error during installation message.� All the other office applications open without an error. Help about does not show SP1 to be installed. This problem was solved by the following:

1) Uninstall Office 2003 SBE
2) Reinstall
3) Goto http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9C51D3A6-7CB1-4F61-837E-5F938254FC47&displaylang=en#filelist
4) Download and install Office2003SP1-kb842532-client-enu.exe to install the SP NOT
Office2003SP1-kb842532-fulfile-enu.exe [installing this file will result in many prompts for files
that do not exist (from my Internet searches) and results in an unusable Excel.exe.

DO NOT USE Office2003SP1-kb842532-fulfile-enu.exe.

There was also a problem with the copy protection of DVDs as I used the VirtualDrive Manager to build a virtual drive for a DVD that I own. Using the Internet, I found a solution to this problem.
After many trials [and errors], I have found a solution that permits VirtualDrive to build a DVD. The packages I tried permitted download & trial, but did not work. If they had, there would have been a $40 cost for the software. Some non-trial/non-download packages were much more expensive.

I note some may misuse the solution below for copyright violation. I am simply using my M1400 to view movies I purchased. Actually, I will show my customers what the Tablet PC is capable of [a business demo].

The solution is FREE!

Two programs got VirtualDrive working:

The solution--DVD43

This is a tiny and *free* program, about 500KB, that runs behind the scenes which will read copy-protection mechanisms found on DVD movie discs (mainly CSS). Because this program runs in the background, you can use 1 Click DVD Copy, CloneDVD, CopyToDVD 3 or Pro DVD to DVD Copy, to backup your DVD movies. DVD43 also requires the Patin-Couffin access layer to be installed on system in order to access your DVD drive on lowest possible level. You can find the Patin-Couffin access layer here. Just install Patin-Couffin, followed by DVD43 and restart your computer.

It took @ 40 minutes to build the DVD and IT WORKS!!!

I am working yet another issue with Microsoft where I want the Tablet PC Input Panel (TIP) to load in an undocked mode when I boot the computer. Currently, TIP is docked (top or bottom) when Windows XP SP2 boots. I have to undock each time to have TIP appear at an input area. If you have a solution, please advise.

Overall, working with this computer is fun. Once the problems are resolved, it will indeed be a delight.

Overall Motion�s techs have been very helpful, although there are some issues that perplex them. At, this point, I give them an A-. I hope something here will be helpful to someone. You have certainly been helpful to me and I deeply appreciate it.

Issues with M1300 and M1400 and internet Explorer displaying embedded .gifs

Hi all, I'm a little perplexed as I am having an identical issue that a client is having and I've not been able to get it fixed myself or get a good answer on how to fix it.

The issue seems to be isolated to .gif files that are used as either Ad's, charts, or images on a web page. The Motions that are having this issue are both running SP2 and I personally have played around with the security settings to no avail.

The reason for needing to see the .gif files is that a client is using his Tablet to occasionally view financial information and charts. The charts in question are in .gif format and do not load, we just get that fun little red X.

I can actually replicate the issue right on the MSN home page, as the advertisement in the upper right hand corner does not load.

Can you help in shedding light on the issues, I know it's not necessarily Motion related, but I figured I'd post here since other Motion users may have experienced the issue.
