there is bluetooth. And the fact that there is no built-in optical drive could be viewed as a plus - extra weight (which you list a negative).
I hardly ever use my cd-rom unless I'm installing something. Most of installs are now over web, so its' even less of an issue. The most I use my cd drive for is for importing songs from a cd.
A portable cd-drive, to me, is much more practical. |

But it's nowhere near a slick looking at the tc1X00.
If a random bystandard with no knowledge of tablet pcs was to see the tc4200 and the tc1100 side by side and asked which one was from the 21st century and which one was from the 20th century, the tc1100 would win. |

I believe HP released tc4200 to compete with other convertabile tablets so you can't really compare it to the tc1x00 models. |

Totally agree with you there, Dan. My initial impressions (visually) were one of disappointment. As a friend aptly pointed out, it looks old Laptopish.
Designwise, I think the TC1100 wins hands down. Why do you think I sold my M200?
That said, the TC4200 is tailored toward a specific market: those who need more of a laptop with tablet functionality, very conservative design - exec types. |

It's only been a day and the TC4200 hasn't been given a chance yet. Either demo it first hand or wait for a review. |

I think the laptop-ish design is not by accident - for those who do not have the courage to take the leap of faith into the fully slate design - I think this is a conservative approach to appeal to those users (and compete with others in the market). I don't think it is in the same league as the TC1100 but I still look forwards to getting a look at one - in the UK that means probably never unless I bought one myself on-line ..! |

Just to set the record straight the new model is 4.5 lbs with the AC adapter accoring the the review I read and the TC1100 is 4.0 lbs with the keyboard attched. That's only 8 onces for an extra almost 2" of screen and nearly twice the CPU.
If you prefer the TC1100 or somthing else you're fine. For me this is great. I loved my TC1100 and would have kept it if I could afford it and there were better synchronization tools avialable. HP is still commited to the TC1100 form factor and the fact that the line is expanding is good news for the tablet community.
All notebooks are a compromise of features, form and weight. Most of the people who say they wish it had an extra feature wouldn't pay more or want it heavier and people who want it lighter wouldn't give any features that would cut the weight.
Take it for what it is. A new unique model. If its not for you then don't buy it but don't be childish about it and be overly critical just because you invested in somthing else or prefer another brand. |

I personally like the convertible form better, because I find that I often need a keyboard. In that regard, this makes perfect sense. However, if a hybrid came out that had full specs with a detachable keyboard that didn't need to be funkily balanced or something (like the TC keyboard), I'd be all over it. |

Guyz, I think you dont understand the concept of tc4200.
I think tc4200 is a nice laptop, with tablet abilities, and that is great! This is basically an nc4000 (the same form factor) with an added tabletpc os, and a digitizer.
This is the best strategy to make tabletpc mainstream, because we have to admit, that the demand for real tablets (like tc1100) is very low, but the demand for subnotebooks (like nc4000) is overwhelming. To have an nc4000 substitute with some nice tabletpc abilities, thats really something that subnotebook buyers will appreciate (they will consider it as an added extra to their subnotebook), and this way they will at least get a sense of what tabletpcs are about. As more and more ppl will buy these convertible subnotebooks, inking will become mainstream, and real tabletpc users will also benefit from this, as more and more applications will support inking.
The tc4200 is not significantly more expensive than nc4000, so this also makes this tablet a logical buy for a subnotebook seeker.
So HP, well done, congratulations, keep up good work.

This is a moot discussion, as of course everyone has and is entitled to their own opinion about whether or not they like or think the new tc4200 is a good tablet. I won't make any comment either way on my subjective opinion until I actually see a tc4200 up close and can play with it. However, established facts should be clear.

While #7 may refer to the graphics card, the fact is, as stated on the HP Tablet tc4200 Product Details page at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/tabletpc/tc4200/specs.html, the "NetXtreme Gigabit PCI Express Ethernet Controller (10/100/1000 NIC)* with HP power down NIC technology" is on board, meaning there is indeed PCI Express on the tc4200.

#1 - show me where the cheap 2lb notebooks are
#2 - I take notes and brainstorm with the pen, I surf on the couch with the pen. When programming on sending emails I prefer to type. I find that my ink written emails tend to be terse and can come off rude.
#3 - Why does every grouchy SOB who's idea of the perfect tablet is not this have to rip it like it the worst thing ever? Do you go to restaurants and make fun of everyone who doesn't order the same thing as you? Eventually there will be tablets with 15" and 17" screens an ones that look more like PDAs and they'll come in all shapes and sizes.
I want to be able to take notes, sketch and brainstorm but I have to be able to write code, admin databases and send long emails. The bonus is I can get one fast enough to be my primary PC and not have to worry about syncing and I can just grab and go. This sounds like it's going to work for me. I bet they sell alot to other people too. |

rdowty, I think tablettc1000 is mostly trying to incite excitement out of people. Just look at the other thread he started with basically the same HP bashing. I would just ignore it. |
