Hi All
Very new to this forum. My buddy got a fujitsu tablet last year and I am now looking at purchasing one. I need some advise, opinions and suggestions. I have about $2700 us to spend. I am a high school teacher (history) and I use my present laptop in the class constantly. I am very interested in the:
Fujitsu T4010D: M 745 1.8 GHz ]1GB ram 60GB (7200) Mullti-Formate DVD Writer
Please let me know why I should or shouldn't buy
Thanks in advance for all your help, Jim

Hi Jim,
If you're a touchtypist and find yourself typing in bed or on the couch a lot, or simply don't trust handwriting enough yet to fully switch, the convertible is a must. Otherwise, if you plan to use the tablet as interactive paper, go with a slate. You can get a great refurb ST5010 from the fujitsu outlet store for about $1600 - just add an extended battery and 1 or 3 years of warranty coverage and you're set. I personally went for the T4010 from Fujitsu's web store (but had to order over the phone to get the student discount).
I wonder if they have an academic discount for school faculty? If not, PortableOne is considered the lowest cost, highest quality option according to these forums. I found their prices about the same as Fujitsu's with the student discount.
I will receive my T4010 next week and will be posting more info. I researched tablets for four months before choosing the T4010. Let me know if you want more info on my research. Good luck! |

Hi,
I love my T4010... I wish I'd gotten the D version... but unless you are doing wifi field testing (part of my job), you won't even need the D version... the centrino card is fine for 95% of all people. Unless you use Linux, the T4010 will do fine... otherwise get the T4010D. I highly recommend the T4000 series! |

Treo,
I understand the centrino drivers for linux are available, although they might be beta. Here's the sourceforge project http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/.
Also, if you had to do wifi field testing, 802.11A is so uncommon that you could probably do fairly thorough testing without it - or am I missing something. |

Jim, My research and decision mirrors Daniel's. I spent months researching, convinced at first that I wanted a slate. After reviewing the various keyboard options for Fujitsu and Motion (the two slates I had narrowed it down to), I realized the only optimum solutions were the keyboard and port replicators designed for the desktop. None of the other keyboard solutions would work easily in transit or on the lap. While I was convinced the slate still would have its uses for me, I thought the whole portable aspect would become more, not less, complicated with a tablet slate. While I would not have to carry around hard copies of documents I had marked up, I would have to carry around extra hardware paraphenalia.
That said, the convertible is definitely not as portable as the ultralite loaded laptop one could buy for about the same amount of money. There is a compromise here: in exchange for the benefits that the tablet platform gives, including marking up documents and carrying ebooks, you are carrying more weight and bulk around. I still think the convertible is the better choice for me rather than slate because of the ability to type on lap, in bed, etc., comfortably.
The T4010D seems well built, the hinge system appears to be secure and solid. I have commented elsewhere that the keyboard is ok, not great, but I am spoiled by the IBM keyboards. I only have 512mb and find the performance fine, but I have not yet added any software other than Office. The screen is fantastic! I know there are those who are waiting for the new tablet convertibles which will have sharper resolution (I think that's the issue, not 100% sure), and if you have young eyes, you may want to wait, too. But the screen on the 4010D is perfect for me.

Hi All
Thanks for the input.
I just ordered the T4010 with: M 745 1.8 GHz ]1GB ram 60GB (7200) Mullti-Formate DVD Writer
I needed for school to run my classes and presentations. Also, I do a lot of video editing at the school so the keyboard is a must.
Then in the summer I work for a logging company (road supervisor) and need both the keyboard and tablet. So for me I think I made the right choice and thanks for the input. Would love to hear more opinions.
Look forward to being an active participant on this website.
Thanks, Jim

Cool - let us know how the video editing goes, I would be interested in doing some myself. Can we import firewire video to our T4010s? Is there a good low-cost movie recorder/editor? How's the one built into Windows (if there is one)?
"Welcome to the future" as someone on the buzz had said to me. |

Hi
I am pretty sure there will be no problem capturing video on the tablet.
I have been making school videos for the past 5 years (athletic video, school year end, graduation, remembrance day and so on). The video editing program we have at the school is adobe premiere pro. We have found it to be outstanding, but it is expensive.
Cheers, Jim

Jim. YAY!!! Welcome to the T4000-series-owners-to-be-club! My configuration is very similar, except I have the 80GB 5400RPM drive and 1.5GB RAM (512MB + separately ordered 1GB upgrade). When does it ship? Mine is supposed to arrive next week. |
